Black History Month
Social Studies During February, divide the class into three groups to research and report on three separate events in Black History.

  1. For Underground Railroad information, start at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH.

  2. For Civil Rights start at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN.

  3. For the story of the Middle Passage on slave ships, visit The African Slave Trade and the Middle Passage.

Famous African Americans ABC Book
This lesson helps students create an ABC book with short biographies of famous African Americans in history.

How the African American Storyteller Impacts the Black Family and Society
The unit is intended to familiarize students with Black writers-storytellers, their works and the impact that their works have left on the Black family and society.

Technology and the African American Inventor
The purpose of this lesson is to create an awareness and understanding that important technological advances within our culture, in a variety of areas, are the result of the work done by a diverse group of people, many of whom are African Americans. To this end, students will be actively involved in discussions, research, and sharing sessions. Between six and ten class periods will be necessary for this lesson.
