Black History Month
Social Studies During February, divide the class into three groups to research and report on three separate events in Black History.

  1. For Underground Railroad information, start at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at www.freedomcenter.org.

  2. For Civil Rights start at the National Civil Rights Museum at www.civilrightsmuseum.org.

  3. For the story of the Middle Passage on slave ships, visit the African Holocaust Website at www.africanholocaust.net.

A Walk Through History – In Honor of Black Americans
In observance of Black History Month, students will research the lives of African Americans who have made special contributions to American life and society. Then students will write a short biography highlighting the person's contribution. In addition, the students will create a monument in honor of the individual. The culminating activity of the lesson will be a monument walk.

Important Events Through the Clivil Rights
Students create a timeline about important events in the early civil rights movement. (Grade 6-8, 9-12)
