Read An Almanac Month
Reading/Social Studies Visit your local bookstore or library and get any one of the many almanacs for kids. Read it with your students and be amazed at all the cool information in there. What can you learn about your state? Our country?

Using an Almanac
Students will work in groups to learn appropriate uses of an almanac and how to find information in it efficiently and effectively. Each group will be responsible for explaining the steps taken to complete the task. This lesson is best used with fourth and fifth grades.

Animals in the Almanac
The students will learn about what is in the almanac by looking through it during the introductory activity.

State by State
Social Studies/Research Whether studying your own state, regions of states or comparing and contrasting particular states, start with The World Almanac® for Kids for concise and specific information about each state. The information is presented in a consistent format to allow you to decide if you want the students to graph comparative populations or areas. Perhaps select two states and have students make Venn diagrams of natural or manufactured resources. Websites are provided for further information as well as individual state map outlines and a pictorial representation of where the state is within the union.

Let's Make a World Series Almanac
Students who participate in this lesson will learn a good deal about the World Series, baseball's final hoorah each fall, and something about creating an almanac, or particular kind of reference book. This lesson might profitably be done in the fall, during the "baseball classic," but could be done at any time of year.

Atlas or Almanac?
This game underscores the multitude of information available in both resources and gets students used to saying the terms as well as distinguishing between the two. The aim is NOT to look up the answers to the questions, but rather to make judgments as to the quicker, easier source if one wanted to find the information.
