Learning About the Animal Kingdom

Name Animals
Art/Science Have students write their names in the center of a large white piece of drawing paper. Then ask them to design an animal of which the outlined shape of their name reminds them. When they finish the drawing, have them do some research about their chosen animal. Do they have any similarities to the animal? Is it an animal they would consider one of their favorites? Why or why not?
Animal Classification
Each section illustrates some simple animal classifications and is accompanied by a slide show, relevant animal photographs, video, and audio clips.
Animal slide shows!
Students will be able to apply what they have learned in their study of animals to one particular animal through research of that animal. They will then put this information into a slide show on a computer. The computer skills used include drawing tools, formatting with font, size, and text color, inserting headers, and arranging text and backgrounds.
Animals Around Us
Students will learn and understand the term habitat, discover that forests, deserts, wetlands, and grasslands are unique and separate habitats, and learn how to identify animals that live in four different environments.
Animal Einsteins: If Only They Could Talk!
In this lesson, students will investigate the communication skills of animals. They will explore their ability to associate abstract concepts or signs with specific objects or actions by solving a puzzle involving decoding symbols.
Webcams in the Classroom: Animal Inquiry and Observation
Can't make it to a zoo? Observe animal habits and habitats using one of the many webcams broadcasting from zoos and aquariums around the United States and the world in this inquiry-based activity that focuses on observation logs, class discussion, questioning, and research.
