Symbolic Mosaics
Social Studies/Art When studying symbols of states or countries, add art to the project by providing a variety of seeds and heavy cardboard. First students will draw the symbol on the cardboard and then glue seeds of appropriate size and color to sections of the board making a 3-d symbol. Each symbol should have a description written about its meaning as well as its construction, then posted with it in the classroom.

American Symbols
Students will learn that a symbol is something that stands for, or represents, something else. They will learn about the national symbols that are unique to our country. They will complete artwork to depict the symbols and read non-fiction books to further their comprehension. Writing skills will be reinforced through various writing activities.

Our National Symbol
Students will know what their country's national symbol is and understand what the symbol represents. They will create their own national symbol and be able to explain what it represents and why they think it would be appropriate.

A Symbol of Myself
Students will reflect on their unique selves, them create a clay "symbol" that represents themselves, and write an explanation that tells about the symbol and why they chose it.
