Words All Around

Age Level:Primary
Prep. Time:30 minutes
Activity Time:20 minutes
Activity Type:Independent/small group
Standards:Recognize and identify letters of the alphabet; understand the meaning of and correctly use new vocabulary
Materials:Bulletin board background, alphabet letters, boxes, and packages students bring from home
Setup:Make a bulletin board divided into 26 sections. Put a letter in each section, alphabetically.

Activity: Have your students bring in labels from various snacks, groceries flyers, or household products. Direct them to cut out words that begin with specific letters and put the words into the correct boxes. Choose a few words to integrate into other units of study. For example, a cereal box could trigger discussion on grain—how and where grains grow and how they are processed into food.

Finding labels from some alphabet letters may be difficult, so allow students to use words that include the letter, but not in the initial position.

Get a camera and take a small group of students on an in-school field trip. Take pictures of the words you find: Exit, Fire Alarm, Principal, Boys, Teachers Only, and so on. Make a collage of the photos and place them on a bulletin board titled "Words Around Our School."

Extension: Use some of these labels as you are teaching nouns, adjectives, and other parts of speech.

Keep a collection of grocery store flyers and/or catalogs for students who might not have access to print at home.
